You're planning your wedding and thinking, do I actually need another photographer? Let's consider a few things.
Is it a good idea to have a second photographer for your big day?
Of course
Do I recommend always having a second photographer for your big day?
No
Let me explain.
First, the reasons for a second shooter.
More Angles, More Moments
Picture this: You're walking down the isle, your husband-to-be is holding back tears or crying like a baby. Your parents are doing the same or wiping their tears and multiple people you care about are showing excitement, their jaws are dropping from seeing you rocking that dress and even kids' braces are showing from how big they are smiling.
Your photographer is focused on you and is getting every key shot they need but what about your partner's reaction? Or the guests and bridal party who are about to explode from having too many feels going on inside.
That's where a second shooter comes in. they're like the backup quarterback- always there to catch what the main photographer can't. Here are some key moments where this really matters:
- First look: One photographer captures your face, the other gets your partner's reaction.
- Ceremony: One gets the wide shot, the other zooms in on emotional guests.
- Reception: While one is snapping your first dance, the other is capturing Grandma busting a move.
Having two perspectives means your wedding album will feel more complete.
Double the Coverage, No Missed Moments
Weddings move fast. Like, blink and you miss it type of fast. With so much happening at once, a second shooter helps ensure nothing gets overlooked.
- Getting Ready: If you and your partner are in separate locations, one photographer can't cover both.
- Big Weddings: If you've got 150+ guests, a second shooter helps capture more reactions and moments.
- Candid Shots: Everyone loves these and we specialize in them. While the lead photographer is directing formal portraits, the second shooter in catching all those natural unscripted laughs and hugs.
Think of it like a highlight reel and behind the scenes footage.
Is It Worth the Extra Cost?
So, I would love to say yes and take more of your money but I put my couple's first.
Yes, adding a second photographer will increase your package price. So here are some things you need to consider when it comes to 💰.
- Your Budget: If you're already stretching every dollar, a talented solo photographer can still get amazing shots. about half of the weddings I've shot have been solo so I know it's possible. As long as you don't have a lazy photographer then you should be ok.
- Wedding Size: If it's an intimate wedding, one photographer may be all you need. But for big celebrations, a secon shooter is a game-changer. Small, elopement, courthouse and micro weddings do not need another photographer in my opinion. My couple's who decided to upgrade and have a second shooter have never regretted it.
- Your Priorities: If you want to capture all the little moments- happy tears, crazy dance moves, guests having a blast- then yes, a second shooter is totally worth it.
The Bottom Line
If your budget allows, get a second photographer. It's one of those things you won't regret, but you might regret not doing it. On the flip side, if your wedding is small and low-key, and you trust your main photographer to capture the most important moments, you're probably fine with just one.
Either way, your wedding photos will be priceless as long as you understand the coverage you're paying for.
